Former England coach Trevor Bayliss was appointed to the Sydney Thunder on Thursday, saying the Australian was excited to go home. The 58-year-old led a one-day World Cup victory in England in 2019 and will coach the team for the next three Twenty20 Big Bash League seasons. “It’s great to be at home and get involved in cricket in New South Wales,” Bayliss said, and Kolkata Knight Riders has also led two Indian Premier League titles.

“The Thunder have done well in recent years. Hopefully we can take a step or two this summer. My first goal is to win as many games as possible and compete in the finals.”

The Thunder finished in the final third season.

Bayris, Sunrisers ’current head coach in Hyderabad, is the replacement for New Zealand’s Shane Bond, who left the post in April for family reasons.
