Filmmaker Bassam Tariq, best known for his work in the film “Mogul Mowgli” directed by Riz Ahmed, is negotiating with Marvel Studios to direct the film adaptation of the popular comic “Blade”. Oscar-winning Mahershala Ali will play the titular vampire hunter.
According to Variety, if Tariq officially rises to the top of the board, he will be the sixth person in color to direct the film for Marvel Studios, along with Ryan Coogler, Chloe Zhao, Destin Cretton, Taika Waititi and Nia DaCosta.
Actress Stacy Osei-Kuffour is writing the screenplay for the film, which is being produced by Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios.
Created by writer Marv Wolfman, Blade appeared in the 1973 comic book “The Tomb of Dracula # 10” as a supporting character.
He is a vampire hunter – half mortal, half immortal – who tries to free the world from vampires as a way to avenge his mother, who himself was killed by a vampire when she gave birth.
The character became famous when New Line adapted the comic in 1998 to star Wesley Snipes on the board and in 2002 and 2004 followed the successful film with two sequels. Rap actor Sticky Fingaz starred in the 2006 TV series.
