Cristiano Ronaldo was in the lead as the European champions Portugal beat Israel 4-0 on Wednesday in the final warm-up to defend the title. Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes scored twice for Ronaldo and Joao Cancelo in a comfortable victory for Lisbon. Ronaldo’s 44th-minute strike was the 104th international goal in 175 games, and Iran’s Ali Daei is five points short of the record.
“We’ve put things right from the game against Spain,” Portuguese coach Fernando Santos said when Spain drew 0-0 in Madrid’s previous game.
“I know what we need to do to win, and I have a lot of confidence in this team,” he said.
Portugal are in their first Euro F Group in a difficult match with Hungary on June 15, four days later after taking on Germany and taking the French World Cup holders on 23 June.
