ENG vs NZ: Stuart Broad named England captain for first test against New Zealand | Cricket News

Stuart Broad will be England’s first captain in his first test against New Zealand starting on Wednesday at the Lord’s with the intention of introducing at least one debutant to host James Bracey. Fast bowler Broad fell dramatically from the first test of the English season in 2020 to the end of that campaign and averaged a meager 13.41 on the ball and passed the 500 Test wicket.

Wounded ordinary captain Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler, who had played a role in the past, rested, skipper Joe Root revealed – he led England’s Twenty20 team before becoming a Test specialist, replacing him on the eve of the two -Test series with New Zealand.

“Stuart is a longtime player,” Root told Reporters on Tuesday.

“He speaks very well, has a very good cricket brain and a short format of captain experience. Ben and Jose are a good man to take that for granted.”

Senior Root batsman added: “He is in real peace of mind with his game in a minute. He plays a big part as a main player and is the leader of that Bowling team. I’m very happy and it’s a great opportunity to take that on.

“You don’t play as many games as you’d like, nor did he break the record without having to go through difficult moments in your career.

“You often respond to that. And he’s always done very well, and that’s why he’s a wonderful player, and one of the best in the world.”

Buttler and Jonny Bairstow rested with Indian Premier League breaks and Ben Foakes was ruled out due to a horrible hamstring injury that slipped on the floor of the Surrey locker room, with Bracey taking the stumps behind him.

The Gloucestershire goalkeeper-bat has been on the team for the past 12 months in a variety of bio-safe bubbles and the 24-year-old has made a good start to the County County Championship this season with an average of almost 479 runs.

“We can definitely confirm – James Bracey will make his debut, which is very exciting,” Root said when asked about England.

“He has worked very hard and has been around the team for a long time. He has a great work ethic.

“He’s back and he’s done really well with Gloucestershi at the start of the season, and he’s very happy to see him take advantage of his opportunity.”

The top-ranked battalion added: “As for the rest of the team, we haven’t gotten enough clarity.

“There are some things we want to weigh and make sure of, in terms of the balance of the side and the exact look.”
