England general manager Ben Stokes said on Monday that he hopes football’s difference will not be defined by the loss he suffered in the 2020 Euro finals. Italy ended England’s dream of winning the Euro 2020 here at Wembley Stadium on Sunday (local time). Azzurri beat England 3-2 on penalties in the 90th minute of normal action and ended in a 1-1 draw in extra time. “I hope they’re not defined. You see where they’ve gone and gotten things in the last two or three years and you know it’s such a young team,” Stokes told ESPNcricinfo.
“They’ve got so much other time to win trophies for England. They’re blessed with youth. An England team has never seen it so exciting. I’m not as massive in my football as other guys. But I totally saw it every time they came out on the field,” Stokes said.
“You know they’re going to be destroyed. They’ll probably hurt a few more weeks. But I’m sure once you get over that and understand what they can achieve, chances are these guys will definitely come in,” he added.
It was the first time England had reached the finals of a major international competition since 1966. Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka lost their chances to score on penalties against England. The English players were abused on social media.
“They will be completely devastated, no doubt. But what they have achieved is incredible. The nation has been completely captivated by what they have done on the pitch. The way Gareth Southgate speaks … I think it’s been phenomenal in everything he’s done, ”Stokes said.
“As a team, even if it’s in another sport, we’re very proud of what they did. It’s a very talented young team because the sky is the limit for them. There are many more years ahead, so it can be tested for more tournaments. But in my locker room and others in their eyes, they are already Absolute Legends, ”he added.
The England Cricket team is playing against Pakistan in a three-match ODI series. The hosts have no 2-0 advantage in the series with the final game to be played on Tuesday.
