Novak Djokovic, the world number one, continued to bet on the 19th Grand Slam title to Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas on Thursday to reach the third round of the French Open. The 34-year-old, who wants to become the first man in his 50s to win more than once in four years, beat Suzanne Lenglen 6-3, 6-2 and 6-4. “I was focused. I thought the third set was very difficult for me because it raised his level of play,” the first-place finisher said after the 350th Grand Slam match.
“It’s a cliché to say ‘day in and day out,’ but for me it’s very important to stay in the moment.”
Djokovic will face Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis in the second week.
The 2016 Roland Garros champion has won three meetings with Berankis in the second round in Paris last year.
Cuevas tested Djokovic on Thursday with his creative shot, but the Serbian star saved eight of his nine breaks and scored 31 winners on a solid screen.
Djokovic will qualify with 13-year-old winner Rafael Nadal, who lost in the final last October.
