Former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar remembered former South African President Nelson Mandela on his birthday with a special post. July 18, 2021, marks the 103rd anniversary of the South African leader and celebrates Nelson Mandela International Day or Mandela Day. Recalling his meetings with the leader who dedicated his life to fighting apartheid in South Africa, Tendulkar shared a video on Twitter on Sunday. The video gives fans a glimpse of Tendulkar’s relationship with the South African leader. The sports icon started the video by pointing to an autograph video.
He said: “Do you know this autograph? I had the privilege of meeting the great man Nelson Mandela in 1992-93. It was the first time India went to South Africa and in fact South Africa was playing its first series long, long against India. He came to see the Wanderers in Johannesburg. “
Recalling the next time he met Mandela, Tendulkar added: “And the second time I met him was on the 1996-97 tour. It was in Cape Town. Coincidentally, in both, I got hundreds of scores. I met him, I said, ‘Sir, your presence brought me great luck. I need to get a percentage twice. Every time I go out together I want to invite you “and we both laughed.”
Speaking about Mandela’s opinion of the sport, Tendulkar said: “Someone who has always pushed the sport. His push meant a lot to us all and he also believed that the sport brought people together. It was a great expression. His thoughts, his ideas, his values will inspire us all and guide us in the years to come. ”
Sharing the video, he wrote in the tweet, “Sport has the power to change the world, it has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people the way other people do.” Nelson Mandela’s wise words will be forever in the creation of the Laureus Sport Awards! Remembering the time I had with him. “

Social media users greeted the leader in the comments section.
Last June, Tendulkar published a quote from Mandela about the power of sport to change the world after the ‘Black Lives Matter’ protests that were taking place in the US at the time.
“Nelson Mandela once said,‘ Sport has the power to change the world. He has the power to unite the world in a way that few others do. “Wise words,” Tendulkar tweeted.
