Family members said famous film director Buddhadeb Dasgupta died here at his residence early Thursday.
He was 77 years old. Dasgupta lives with his married wife and two daughters. The director of the national award had kidney disease for a long time and was doing dialysis twice a week, family members said.
West Bengal Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee condoled his death.
“Saddened by the death of the famous filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta. Through his work, he introduced lyricism into the language of cinema. His death is a great loss for the film Fraternity. Condolences to his family, colleagues and admirers,” Banerjee said. Twitter.
Condoling his death, filmmaker Goutam Ghosh said: “Buddha is making movies, writing articles and being active despite failing health. He directed Tope and Urojahaz even when he was not well. It is a great loss for everyone.”
