Tokyo Games: Gurmeet Singh is not accredited for the Olympics.© AFP
Coach Gurmeet Singh and discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur coach Rakhi Tyagi will not be traveling to the Tokyo Olympics due to lack of accreditation. As it is known, the Indian Athletics Federation (AFI) did not work at the last minute to get the accreditation of Gurmeet and Kamalpreet coach Rakhi Tyagi as the names were on the long list submitted months before the start of the Olympics. “Gurmeet’s name and Rakhi Tyagi’s did not appear on the long list submitted a few months ago and the last-minute efforts accredited by AFI did not bear fruit,” a group source told PTI.
“We’re still trying.”
Gurpreet Singh will represent India on foot in the 50km race. He won the national race championship in February and was ranked 60th in the world with an Olympic ticket.
AFI has nominated 26 athletes for the Olympics. The 47-member contingent will consist of 11 coaches, eight assistants, a team doctor and a team leader.
The gang will head to Tokyo on July 23 with medal hopes especially lying on the shoulders of javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra.
