A source familiar with the development told ANI: “It was discussed at a meeting of key officials in the department. We have nominations, but it will be at a standstill because we wanted to include Olympic medals. The final call will be made soon. “
The Tokyo Olympics will start on July 23 and end on August 8 while the National Sports Awards are given annually by the President of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan on August 29.
National sports awards include Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna Award, Dronacharya Award and Dhyan Chand Award. The event coincides with the anniversary of the birth of major hockey legend Dhyan Chand.
To date, more than 120 athletes from India have qualified for the Tokyo Olympics. The games were to be held last year but were postponed due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
