A female gymnast from the United States tested positive for COVID-19 in pre-Olympic training in Tokyo. The athlete was training before the Tokyo Olympics opened in Inzai City, Chiba Prefecture, according to Kyodo News. The athlete’s name has not been revealed so far but it has been reported that the female gymnast is a teenager. Earlier on Monday, beach volleyball player Ondrej Perusic from the Czech Republic tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Ondrej is currently symptomatic and isolated by the rules. The second case of the Czech team was after an officer revealed that he was positive for COVID (through a test) after the contingent arrived at the airport.
On Sunday, eight members of the British Olympic team entered isolation after a flight to the Tokyo Games after being contacted with a positive COVID-19. Six athletes and two members of the support staff have given a negative response before leaving and arriving in Tokyo, but have now identified it as a close relationship of an infected person who was with them on the flight, Sky News reported.
However, the member who tested positive for COVID-19 is not a member of the UK team, the British Olympic Association has clarified.
Three members of South Africa’s men’s under-23 football team have also tested positive for COVID-19 and are currently isolated at the Tokyo 2020 facility.
The three members who tested positive for COVID-19 are: Thabiso Monyane (player), Kamohelo Mahlatsi (player) and video analyst Mario Masha.
These three gave positive results in the final tests of daily sputum (saliva).
